New River Valley Slideshow
The New River Valley offers an abundance of recreational, cultural, and entertainment opportunities. Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, is the states largest university, and ranked among the top 50 research universities in the country. The football team is nationally ranked, and draws huge crowds every fall. The appalacian trail runs through the New River Valley, with 462 miles of the trail within the boarders of Virginia. The Cascades Waterfalls in Giles County is a spectacular site, with a 2 mile trail winding along the Little Stoney Creek up to the falls. Also in Giles, is Mountain Lake. It is one of only 2 natural lakes in Virginia, and a walk on the loop trail around its crystal clear waters is a real treat. At 4,000 feet, the air is always crisp and clear. The Mountain Lake Resort is a huge stone lodge above the lake. This is where the popular film, Dirty Dancing was filmed. The New River, which meanders through the New River Valley, is the oldest river in the United States, and is designated as a State Scenic River. Claytor Lake, which is a dammed portion of the New River, stretches 21 miles, and has over 100 miles of shore line. The Claytor Lake State Park offers fishing, boating, swimming, camping and hiking opportunities. Among the museums and historical sites of the New River, is the Smithfield Plantation House. Built in 1775, it has been the birth place of 2 Virginia governors. The Virgina Tech Museum of Geological Sciences has the largest display of minerals in the state of Virginia. As you can imagine, the New River Valley is a wonderful place to live, with all kinds of interesting and exciting opportunities.
